Product Details

In a nutshell, the Portenta X8 from Arduino is a powerful, industrial-grade SOM with Linux OS preloaded onboard as standard. Thanks to its modular container architecture its capable of running device-independent software. It also offers the flexibility of Linux combined with real-time applications through the Arduino environment, so you get the best of both worlds! Not only that, but it also leverages Wi-Fi/Bluetooth® Low Energy connectivity to securely perform OS/application OTA updates. If you’re looking for an industrial-grade SOM from a brand you can trust, then look no further.

Key benefits of Arduino Portenta X8

Two industrial-grade products in one powerful SOM
Get the best of both worlds! Portenta X8 combines Arduino’s availability of libraries/skills with container-based Linux distribution. This means developers can perform real-time tasks, while simultaneously performing high-performance processing on Linux cores. Portenta X8 is a powerful SOM (System on Module) with onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® Low Energy connectivity. It features two microprocessors:

  • NXP ® i.MX 8M Mini Cortex ®-A53 quad-core, up to 1.8GHz per core + 1x Cortex ®-M4 up to 400MHz
  • STM32H747XI dual-core Cortex ®-M7 up to 480Mhz +M4 32 bit Arm ® MCU up to 240Mhz

Ready to use, right out of the box!
Portenta X8 comes with Linux OS (Yocto) distribution already preloaded onboard, meaning you can crack on with developing incredible applications as soon as you have it out of the box.

A secure system you can trust
Thanks to its crypto chip on dedicated bus, Portenta X8 offers industrial-grade security at the hardware level, with a continuously maintained Linux kernel distribution, to keep security up-to-date and secure by OTA device updates and fleet management. The crypto element ensures a secure connection at the hardware level making Portenta X8 a secure SOM, that you can trust. PSA certified IoT security from ARM®.

Compatible with other Arduino Portenta products
The Portenta X8 is compatible with other Arduino Portenta products, meaning you can combine hardware to create your ideal solution

Potential uses of the Portenta X8

Portenta X8’s flexibility and power make it ideal for many applications, whether you’re looking to make your agriculture smart, automate your building, or interested in how Portenta X8 can help you automate industrial processes, we’re certain it will help create a solution for your needs. We’ve highlighted some potential applications:

  • Autonomous guided vehicles: Because the Portenta X8 can utilise Linux containers such as ROS within the Arduino environment it’s an ideal solution for autonomous guided vehicles. If you combine the Portenta X8 with a Portenta Max Carrier (or other custom carriers), the X8-based AGV will be able to quickly interface with all the required components (cameras, lidars, motorwheels, batteries etc). On top of that, its capable of evaluating the most efficient route supporting flow improvements.
  • Behavioural analytics for workplaces: Innovative IoT solutions are imperative to making workplaces safer. The Portenta X8 can interact with environmental smart sensors to implement real-time ML and image processing on the edge. This technology has the potential to recognise dangers within the workplace, for example, vehicle collisions, man down incidents etc and send alerts in real time.
  • Smart agriculture solutions: A Portenta X8-based navigation system can be integrated into a smart tractor to map crop fields and adjust the vehicle’s trajectory. This solution could help avoid the risk of duplicated crop treatments which could result in crop damage and potential loss of revenue.
